Biography of Francesco NEGRO

Francesco Negro earned his MD in 1982 and was board-certified in Gastroenterology at the University of Torino, Italy. He undertook post-doctoral training on hepatitis Delta at the Georgetown University and then at the NIH, USA. At the University Hospital of Geneva, Switzerland, since 1994, he analysed the HCV replication at the tissue level, leading to the discovery that HCV genotype 3 causes a particularly severe form of liver steatosis.  His current research, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation, focuses on the mechanisms of glucose metabolism alterations in hepatitis C. He has participated in several clinical trials in acute and chronic HCV and is Founder and Chairman of the Swiss Hepatitis C Cohort Study. He is currently Full Professor at the Geneva Faculty of Medicine, member of the Governing Board of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) and of the EASL International Liver Foundation.
