Biography of David NELSON

Dr. David Nelson is Professor of Medicine and Assistant Vice President for Research at the University of Florida where he serves as the Director of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute. The mission of this NIH funded institute is to improve how biomedical research is conducted and to enable scientists to work together to accelerate the translation of laboratory discoveries into clinical treatments. He received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College, his medical degree from SUNY Upstate University in Syracuse, completed a Residency in Internal Medicine at The University of Massachusetts, and obtained fellowship training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Florida. Dr. Nelson’s area of clinical expertise is Hepatology with an emphasis on the management of viral hepatitis and liver cancer. Dr. Nelson also has strong translational research interests, focusing primarily on the immunopathogenesis and treatment of chronic hepatitis C and hepatocellular carcinoma. In 2013, he was recognized as one of the Clinical Research Forum’s Top 10 Clinical Research Achievements. He currently oversees more than 15 active clinical trials and has a 15 year track record of NIH funding. He serves as Principal Investigator on both basic science and clinical research grants, along with mentoring/training grants in Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Diseases. Dr. Nelson has an impressive record of academic achievement with more than $30 million in research funding and over 200 publications.
