Biography of Alessandra MANGIA
Alessandra Mangia is Head of the Liver Unit at the Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico ‘Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza’ Hospital in
San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy. She specialized in gastroenterology at the Catholic University in Rome, Italy.
Professor Mangia has participated in basic research and clinical trials in viral hepatitis for over 20 years and her special area of focus is the
individualisation of treatment for hepatitis C which in 2005, led to her proposal for an innovative schedule of treatment for patients with hepatitis C virus genotype 2 and 3 infection. Her recent research has involved the impact of host genetics on liver disease and has performed basic research and clinical trials relating to IL28B, inosine triphosphatase genetic variants and determinants of relapse after treatment. She was principal investigator in several international trials on Direct Acting Antivirals.
She has authored more than 200 publications and has published her work in prestigious journals including the New England Journal of Medicine,
Hepatology, Gastroenterology and the Journal of Hepatology . She is currently a reviewer for Gastroenterology, Hepatology , the Journal of Hepatology and other top ranked journals. She is a member of the European Association for the Study of the Liver and was a member of the coordinating
committee of the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver from 2002 to 2005 and go the Italian Society of Gastroenterology (SIGE) till 2017.
