Biography of Vincenzo MAZZAFERRO

Vincenzo Mazzaferro MD PhD is full Professor of Surgery at the Department of Oncology of
the University of Milan and Director of the Gastro-Intestinal Surgery and Liver Transplantation
Unit at the Istituto Nazionale Tumori (National Cancer Institute) of Milan, Italy.
He graduated cum laude at the University of Turin (Italy) and was trained and board
certificated cum laude in General Surgery and in Oncology at the University of Milan (Italy) and
in Liver Surgery and Transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh (USA).
From the early nineties he has developed several successful clinical and experimental projects
in liver oncology and transplantation and leaded research and clinical projects focused on
innovative approaches to liver diseases, particularly related to cancer. Today he is in charge of
the HPB (hepato-pancreatic-biliary) oncology program in the oldest and most active
comprehensive cancer Institution in Italy. Through validated results and cutting-edge clinical
research he has contributed to a large number of national and international advancements
related to surgical oncology. He has been awarded for his scientific contributions by the Italian
Association of Cancer Research, the Société Française de Chirurgie Digestive, the American
Association of Cancer Research, the European Association for the Study of the Liver, the
Interventional Radiological Society of Europe and the City of Milan. He has served as
Associated Editor and member of the board of major Journals devoted to surgery, hepatology,
oncology and transplantation..
Doctor Mazzaferro leads a busy clinical unit accounting for about 900 patients per year, mainly
in need of surgical and interventional treatment of the HPB and upper gastrointestinal cancer.
He has an outstanding operatory record. He is a founding member of the International Liver
Cancer Association and member of European and American Societies of Hepatology, Surgery
and Transplantation. He authored about 400 publications in international peer-reviewed
medical Journals and has delivered more than 500 lectures (H-index: 75)
